Todd Luger :: Blog :: Another benefit of organic produce

March 20, 2008

I have noted elsewhere that conventionally grown vegetables must confer significant health benefits as all studies documenting the decreased cancer rates in those who consumed more than five servings a day were done on folks consuming the typical produce found in a grocery store. In other words, whatever negative effect there might be from consuming small amounts of pesticide residue were more than offset by all the good stuff that's in fruits and veggies. An important component of that "good stuff" are constituents called flavonoids. A recent study now shows that organic produce has twice as much of that good stuff as that which is conventionally grown.

  1. This is important stuff. It provides one more rationale for going organic. I was talking to a friend the other day about strategies for getting more folks to green up and one that has been on my mind for a while is hitting people where they live. People might not care about species dying off from pesticide contamination of land and water, but if it will affect their children, that's a whole 'nuther story. I'd rather people become more conscious and do things out of more altruistic motives, but most folks are motivated by ego-driven desires. I guess it's kind of an "ends justifies the means" strategy, but at least in this case, nobody is getting hurt by the methods used to accomplish the goals. We are still telling the truth, just focusing on a truths that some find more convincing than others.
